Dr. Schaeffer mentions the work of John Cage in several of his works, highlighting that Cage's approach to "modern" musical composition represents a lapse in music toward nihilism and non-reason. Cage attempts to communicate the fragmentation in human communication through disorder, yet all the while using the order of timekeeping.
