HANS ROOKMAAKER ON ART COMMERCIALISM:

THE CONFLICTING DEMANDS OF ART IN OUR TIME: "We want artists to be serious and create deep things that have almost an eternal value, things that people of culture can talk about centuries later. But if they want to be successful, artists have to bow down to present tastes, be commercial and play the clown rather than the sage. So artists are in the midst of conflicting demands."

~ Hans Rookmaaker, Art Needs No Justification, Editor's Note: Hans Rookmaaker (1922-1977) was a dear friend of the Schaeffers and an important part of the early stages of L'Abri.
