WHAT IS, IS RIGHT, OR IS IT?:

"The sadism of Marquis de Sade is the specter standing behind any determinist because the basis of de Sade's sadism was his concept of determinism. De Sade's position was that what is, is right; and if a person holds any form of determinism, he must agree that de Sade's conclusion is the only logical one. This is not to say that the determinists always carry their position to de Sade's logical conclusion, but it is the conclusion. In any form of determinism, what is considered right or acceptable is arbitrary."

COBELLIGERENTS, NOT ALLIES:

"Christians must realize that there is a difference between being a cobelligerent and an ally. At times we will seem to be saying exactly the same thing as those without a Christian base are saying. If there is social injustice, say there is social injustice. If we need order, say we need order. In these cases, and at these specific points, we would be cobelligerents. But we must not align ourselves as though we are in any camp built on a non-Christian base. We are an ally of no such camp."

PATRIOTIC LOYALTY:

"...patriotic loyalty must not be identified with Christianity. As Christians we are responsible, under the Lordship of Christ in all of life, to carry the Christian principles into our relationship to the state. But we must not make our country and Christianity to be synonymous."

ONE BASIC PROBLEM:

"Modern problems in many fields are really not many, but one basic problem with a number of results in what at first may seem to be unrelated fields or disciplines...if our comprehension of this relatedness is not clear at its base, we cannot give basic solutions to effect a cure."

THE FOUNDATION:

"Unless the Bible is without error, not only when it speaks of salvation matters, but also when it speaks of history and the cosmos, we have no foundation for answering questions concerning the existence of the universe and its form and the uniqueness of man. Nor do we have any moral absolutes, or certainty of salvation, and the next generation of Christians will have nothing on which to stand."

~Dr. Francis Schaeffer, APPENDIX B, The Church at the End of the Twentieth Century - What Difference Does Inerrancy Make? (March 1982, International Council on Biblical Inerrancy)

PROPHETIC: BLACK-WHITE CRISIS:

"The evangelical church seems to specialize in being behind. We began to talk about the pressures of the black-white crisis and the urban problems only after most of society had been talking about them for a long time. And, of course, these are real and a part of the whole, but the major problem we are going to face--as I see it, and I could be wrong and I hope I am--in the next twenty years or so is revolution with repression. Society is going to change. I believe that when my great-grandchildren grow to maturity, they will face a culture that has little similarity to ours. And the church today should be getting ready and talking about issues of tomorrow and not about issues of thirty and forty years ago, because the church is going to be squeezed in a wringer." ~ Dr. Francis Schaeffer, The Church at the End of the Twentieth Century, 1970!!!

THE LIBERAL TRIP:

"The difficulty with modern [Liberal] theology is that it is really no different from taking drugs. You may try drugs, you may try modern liberal theology. It makes no difference--both are trips, separated from reason."

OPEN TO MANIPULATION:

"It is obvious: the future is open to manipulation. Who will do the manipulating? Will it be the new elite on the side of an establishment authoritarianism or another elite? Whoever achieves political or cultural power in the future will have at his disposal techniques of manipulation that no totalitarian ruler in the past has ever had. None of these are only future; they all exist today waiting to be used by the manipulators."

YOU SAY IT, YOU CAN'T LIVE IT!:

"Modern man says, 'No, we are just machines--chemically determined or psychologically determined.' But nobody consistently lives this way in his life. I would insist that here is a presupposition which intellectually, in the laboratory, would be cast out simply because it does not explain what is."

ONE BASIC PROBLEM:

"...modern problems in many fields are really not many, but one basic problem with a number of results in what at first may seem to be unrelated fields or disciplines. Thus, the modern cultural problem, the sociological problem, the problem of governing our countries today, the problems of ecology and epistemology are all related, for the basic problem of modern man gives the specific form in which each of these confronts us. And if our comprehension of this relatedness is not clear at its base, we cannot give basic solutions to effect a cure."

THE DEATH OF DEMOCRACY:

"The church is confronted with people who really believe that democracy is dead, who really believe that such an age is gone. I agree, unless we can return to a Reformation base with real reformation and real revival. These are the things the evangelical church should be getting prepared for."

THE FORCE OF THE SEEN:

"You feel you know everything because you have actually seen the picture with your own eyes, but in every situation you have been given an edited version... When what is shown on television is carefully edited, this force of the seen is then an absolute form of manipulation."

MODERN-MODERN SCIENCE:

"...the view of the older science (a science whose concept of the uniformity of natural causes in an open system was completely consistent with biblical thought) was being replaced by what I call modern, modern science (a concept which, by the uniformity of natural causes in a closed system, eventually leaves no room for God or a significant man)."
