Overview:

An eye opening book and film that gives us Schaeffer's view of western civilization. Schaeffer, walks us through the historical time line from Rome to his present day showing the trends in thought, ideas and worldviews that have gotten us here.

History:

According to Frank Schaeffer, Francis' son, the film idea originated from him. However, we have been informed that the idea itself was suggested to Frank by Rick Pearcy, to pass on to Francis. Nevertheless, from an interview with Colin Duriez, Schaeffer indicates and confirms that Frank was at least persuasive in getting his father to move into film during this time.

However, it is evident from this same interview that Dr. Schaeffer specifically had hoped for an opportunity to make a rebuttal of Kenneth Clark's "Civilisation," and Jacob Bronowski's Ascent of Man. Apparently Billy Zeoli the president of Gospel Films in 1972 was suggesting a TV series in this regard.

One thing that should not be forgotten however is that much of the core early inspiration for a large portion of the historic content came from Schaeffer's tour of Europe after WW II. He had been sent by the Independent Board for Presbyterian Foreign Missions to survey the needs and state of the church in Europe. After these travels, the Schaeffer's would become missionaries of the IBPFM.

Publisher's Description:

As one of the foremost evangelical thinkers of the twentieth century, Francis Schaeffer long pondered the fate of declining Western culture. In this brilliant book he analyzed the reasons for modern society's state of affairs and presented the only viable alternative: living by the Christian ethic, acceptance of God's revelation, and total affirmation of the Bible's morals, values, and meaning.
