UNDERSTANDING WHAT WE GAIN AND LOSE IN TECHNOLOGY:

"Let's consider a principle about all of communication technology. They are, as [Marshall] Mcluhan said, 'extensions of man,' and these extensions both ampliphy and attenuate. So let's take a very simple technology here; the microphone. The microphone helps extend the voice further away... However, let's say I'm speaking to a very large group, per impossible, a stadium of people. The microphone would be necessary for most people to hear at all, but of course, if I'm here and a person is a hundred yards away from me, the sense of the personal presense is diminished, even though the voice is amplified."
