SCHAEFFER ON THE MOUNTAINS:

"I thought how our dear Lord comes into more proper perspective in such a place as this--for the higher the mountains, the more understandable is the glory of Him who made them and who holds them in His hand. But the other side is also true: man also comes into his proper place. As the Lord gains in greatness, in comparison to the mountains, so man diminishes."

TIME PLUS CHANCE:

"If we do not begin with a personal Creator, eventually we are left (no matter how we string it out semantically) with the impersonal plus time plus chance. We must explain everything in the uniqueness of man, and we must understand all of the complexity of the universe on the basis of time plus chance."

You seem to be able to talk in such a way that they understand what you're saying, even if they do not accept it.' WHEN I HEAR "JESUS":

"I have come to the point where, when I hear the word Jesus--which means so much to me because of the Person of the historic Jesus and His work--I listen carefully because I have with sorrow become more afraid of the word Jesus than almost any other word in the modern world. The word is used as a contentless banner, and our generation is invited to follow it. But there is no rational, scriptural content by which to test it, and thus the word is being used to teach the very opposite things from those which Jesus taught."

THE NEW JESUS MYSTICISM:

"...some evangelicals have recently been asserting that what matters is not setting out to prove or disprove propositions; what matters is an encounter with Jesus. When a Christian has made such a statement he has, in an analyzed or unanalyzed form, moved upstairs."

~ Dr. Francis Schaeffer, Escape from Reason - Editor's Note: Schaeffer's "moved upstairs" phrase implies one has taken a leap into non-reason. He is not saying that an "encounter with Jesus," is not important, but that a Jesus without the truth content of Scripture is just another form of subtle mysticism.

FREEDOM IS NOT NATURAL:

"In our own country we have enjoyed enormous human freedom. But at the same time this freedom has been founded upon forms of government, law, culture, and social morality which have given stability to individual and social life, and have kept our freedoms from leading to chaos. There is a balance here between form and freedom which we have come to take as natural in the world. But it is not natural. And we are utterly foolish if we do not recognize that this unique balance which we have inherited from the Reformation thought-forms is not automatic in a fallen world. This is clear when we look at the long span of history. But it is equally clear when we read the daily newspaper and see half the world locked in totalitarian oppression."

IT MUST ENCOMPASS ALL:

"True spirituality cannot be abstracted from truth at one end, nor from the whole man and the whole culture at the other. If there is a true spirituality, it must encompass all."

RESTING ON TRUTH CONTENT:

"It is very important to realize, over against modern concepts of 'spiritual experience,' that the biblically based experience rests firmly on truth. It is not only an emotional experience, nor is it contentless."

TWO PRACTICAL TEST:

"...there are two practical tests as to when we are coveting against God or men; first, I am to love God enough to be contented; second, I am to love men enough not to envy."

"When what is shown on television is carefully edited, this force of the seen is then an absolute form of manipulation."

CONNOTATION AND MEANING:

"Words have two meanings, the definition and the connotation. The connotation goes on no matter what you do with the definition. Modern man destroys the definition of religious words, but nevertheless likes to cash in on their connotation/motivation force."

TOTAL ALIENATION:

"...modern man does in fact assume-wittingly or unwittingly-that the universe and man can be explained by the impersonal plus time plus chance. And in this case man and his aspirations stand in total alienation from what is."

EVERYTHING IN THE MACHINE:

"Modern, modern science,...extended the idea of the uniformity of natural causes by adding a new phrase— 'in a closed system.' This little phrase changed all of life because it put everything within the machine...If everything is put into the machine, of course there is no place for God. But also there is no place for man, no place for the significance of man, no place for beauty, for morals or for love. When you come to this place, you have a sea without a shore. Everything is dead."

~ Dr. Francis Schaeffer, The Church at the End of the 20th Century. Editor Note: "Modern, modern science" is what Schaeffer seems to have begun to call Postmodernism, before others formulated a term.

OUR UNIQUENESS TELLS US THE TRUTH :

"The list is rather long, for man is distinguished from both animals and machines on the basis of his creativity, his moral motions, his need for love, his fear of nonbeing, and his longings for beauty and for meaning. Only the biblical system has a way of explaining these factors which make man unique."

DOCTRINE IS A CIRCLE:

"...the Christian doctrinal and intellectual position lays down a circle rather than a point...a circle of such a nature that it will warn us when we come to a place of danger. We should see the edge of the circle as an absolute limit past which we 'fall off the edge of the cliff'"

SCHAEFFER'S PASSING (May 15th, 1984):

"He will long be remembered as one of the great Christian thinkers of our century, with a childlike faith and a profound compassion toward others. It can rarely be said of an individual that his life touched many others and affected them for the better; it will be said of Francis Schaeffer that his life touched millions of souls and brought them to the truth of their Creator."

A PROPER HUMANISM:

"...only the biblical position produces a real and proper 'humanism.' Naturalistic humanism leads to a diminishing of man and eventually to a zeroing of man. But the Christian position is that man is made in the image of God and even though he is now a sinner, he can do those things that are tremendous-he can influence history"

"I must say, when I pray for my country and our culture, I do not pray for God's justice. I can only plead for His mercy. If we had justice of God, we would not have peace. We would have a situation like Jeremiah's"

THE MANIPULATION OF NO ABSOLUTE TRUTH:

"Men no longer believe that there are absolutes, and more and more it has become the accepted thing not to speak the truth. The business contract is not honored if, legally, a way can be found around it. The employer does not honor his promise. The employee responds in kind. As men have turned away from God, who alone gives a basis for absolutes in truth, men have become untruthful and hypocritical with each other....our generation has come to accept it as normal and thus to be manipulated by it."

TO ENJOY HIM FOREVER:

"Often when we in the evangelical and orthodox circles talk about the purpose of man, we quote from the first answer of the Westminster Catechism: 'Man's chief end is to glorify God.' And often the sentence is ended there. This completely changes our Reformation forefathers' understanding of the Scriptures. If you are going to give the complete biblical answer, you must finish their sentence: 'Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever.' That changes the whole view of life."

WE DO NOT NEED 51 PERCENT!:

"We do not need 51 percent of the people to begin to have an influence. If 20 percent of the American population were really regenerate Christians, clear about their doctrines, beliefs and values, taking truth seriously, taking a consistent position, we could begin, not to have an overwhelming consensus, but at least to have a vital voice again..."

LEARN TO READ:

"Americans don't read enough (that's true), and Americans read too much (that's true too). What I mean is that many don't read enough material to really be informed, and yet they read too much because what they do read they often do not stop to assimilate and think through. I urge you, in such a day as ours, to really truly learn to read!"
